BIOBLACK PROJECT - Raising Awareness for the Black Sea People to Recognize and Protect Black Sea Biodiversity

BIOBLACK (BSB00794) is funded by the Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin with total budget 425 166 EUR, from which 382.649 EUR are provided by the Interreg Programme.

Project Mission:

Awareness leads to knowledge, and knowledge leads to protection.

There are three Partners from three countries participating in this project – Turkiye, Romania and Bulgaria.

Biodiversity in the Black Sea is under severe threat from human activities such as overfishing, pollution, invasive species, and habitat destruction, requiring urgent and coordinated action across the region.

The project aims to raise awareness and promote conservation of Black Sea biodiversity through educational tools, stakeholder engagement, citizen science via the BLACKPYRAMID app, and international collaboration.

To achieve this objective, the project anticipate the following activities:

  • Preparation of a report on the state of biodiversity;
  • Development of informational materials to raise public awareness;
  • Creation of 3D‑printed marine organisms (native, introduced, invasive, protected and endangered);
  • Development of the BLACKPYRAMID mobile application for mapping marine organisms;
  • Trainings, expeditions and workshops to enhance awareness of Black Sea biodiversity.

Expected Results:

Increased public awareness among residents of the Black Sea region; 

  • Promotion of a joint approach and regional cooperation among governments, organizations and individuals for biodiversity protection;
  • Development of tools (national reports, BLACKPYRAMID application) supporting knowledge and research on Black Sea species;
  • Trained stakeholders with improved understanding of native, non‑native, endangered and extinct species.
